About Zayed International Airport
Abu Dhabi International Airport is the main airport serving Abu Dhabi, the capital of the United Arab Emirates, and a growing hub for intercontinental air travel. Located approximately 30 kilometers from the city center on the mainland, the airport has undergone a massive transformation with the opening of the Midfield Terminal in 2023, now known as Terminal A. This new terminal, which cost approximately $3 billion and took over a decade to build, has a capacity of 45 million passengers per year and features stunning contemporary architecture with a sweeping arched roof inspired by traditional Arabic design. The terminal includes 65 contact gates, one of the largest duty-free retail areas in the world, and advanced biometric technology for seamless passenger processing. Abu Dhabi International handles over 24 million passengers annually and serves as the primary hub for Etihad Airways, the national airline of the UAE. Wizz Air Abu Dhabi, a low-cost carrier, also operates from the airport. The airport offers U.S. preclearance facilities, allowing passengers to clear United States Customs and Border Protection before departure, arriving at U.S. destinations as domestic passengers. AUH operates two runways and provides ground transportation via bus services and taxis, with plans for future rail connections. The airport's strategic position in the Arabian Gulf places it within an eight-hour flight of approximately two-thirds of the world's population, making it a competitive connecting hub for travel between East and West.
