About Suvarnabhumi Airport
Suvarnabhumi Airport is the main international airport serving Bangkok, Thailand, and one of the busiest airports in Southeast Asia. The airport opened in 2006 after decades of planning and construction, replacing the old Don Mueang International Airport as Bangkok's primary commercial airport, though Don Mueang later reopened for domestic and low-cost carrier operations. Suvarnabhumi, whose name means Golden Land in Sanskrit, is located 25 kilometers east of central Bangkok in Samut Prakan Province. The airport features one of the world's largest single-building passenger terminals, designed by Helmut Jahn, with a distinctive wave-form roof spanning over 563,000 square meters. Suvarnabhumi handles over 60 million passengers annually and serves as the hub for Thai Airways International and Bangkok Airways, hosting a wide range of international carriers connecting Europe, the Middle East, East Asia, and Oceania. The Airport Rail Link connects the airport to Phaya Thai Station in central Bangkok in approximately 30 minutes, with connections to the BTS Skytrain and MRT subway. A satellite terminal, SAT-1, opened in 2024 to increase capacity with 28 additional gates for international flights. The airport operates two parallel runways with a third planned. Suvarnabhumi's role as a major transit hub is enhanced by Thailand's immense popularity as a tourist destination, with millions of international visitors passing through the airport each year en route to beach resorts, temples, and destinations across the country and wider region.
