About Munich Airport
Munich Airport, officially named Franz Josef Strauss Airport, is the second-busiest airport in Germany and a major European hub. Located 28 kilometers northeast of Munich in the Erdinger Moos area, the airport opened in 1992 as a replacement for the former Munich-Riem Airport. MUC handles over 47 million passengers per year across two terminals and a satellite facility. Terminal 2, operated jointly by Lufthansa and Munich Airport, serves Lufthansa and Star Alliance partners and features the Satellite Terminal, which opened in 2016 to add capacity for Schengen and non-Schengen flights. Terminal 1 handles other airlines. Munich Airport is a major hub for Lufthansa, second only to Frankfurt in the airline's network, and offers extensive intercontinental service. The S-Bahn lines S1 and S8 connect the airport to Munich Hauptbahnhof in approximately 40 minutes, and an express rail link has been planned to reduce travel time. Munich Airport has been repeatedly recognized as one of the best airports in Europe by Skytrax, earning a five-star rating. The airport is known for its distinctive Bavarian touches, including an on-site brewery and traditional beer garden in the central area between terminals. MUC operates two parallel runways and a proposed third runway has been the subject of regional debate.
