Several Antarctic research stations use runways carved directly into sea ice or glacial ice, with some supporting aircraft as large as the C-17 Globemaster.
Explanation
McMurdo Station in Antarctica operates multiple runway surfaces depending on the season: a sea ice runway in winter and spring, a compacted snow runway on the Ross Ice Shelf in summer, and a white ice runway on the Pegasus ice field.
