6
airports
London is served by six major airports (Heathrow, Gatwick, Stansted, Luton, City, and Southend), more than any other metropolitan area.
Explanation
London's multi-airport system evolved because no single airport could meet the capital's enormous demand, and expansion of existing airports faced fierce local opposition. Heathrow handles long-haul traffic, Gatwick mixes long-haul and leisure, Stansted and Luton serve low-cost carriers, City focuses on business travelers, and Southend handles overflow leisure traffic. Together they process over 180 million passengers annually.
