Frequently Asked Questions

What is a minimum connection time (MCT)?
Minimum Connection Time is the shortest layover duration that airlines and airports consider sufficient for a passenger to transfer between flights. MCTs account for deplaning, walking between gates or terminals, security re-screening, and immigration processing. Airlines will not sell connecting tickets with layovers shorter than the published MCT.
Do I need to re-clear security during a connection?
It depends on the airport and connection type. Domestic-to-domestic connections at most airports do not require re-screening. International arrivals connecting to any other flight usually require passing through immigration, customs, and re-screening. Some airports (like those in the EU Schengen zone) have streamlined intra-zone transfers.
What happens if my first flight is delayed and I miss my connection?
If both flights are on the same booking, the airline is responsible for rebooking you on the next available flight at no extra cost. If the flights are on separate bookings (self-transfer), you are responsible for purchasing a new ticket. Always allow extra buffer time for self-transfers.
How much extra time should I allow beyond the minimum?
We recommend adding at least 30-60 minutes beyond the MCT for comfort and to account for minor delays. For unfamiliar airports or international connections, adding 60-90 minutes extra is advisable. If your layover also includes checked baggage reclaim and re-check, add even more time.

Methodology

Connection time assessment uses minimum connection time (MCT) guidelines that vary by connection type. Domestic-to-domestic connections typically require 45-60 minutes minimum. International connections involving immigration and customs require 90-120 minutes minimum. Additional time is added for large airports that require terminal transfers. These are general guidelines; actual MCTs published by specific airports may vary.
