About Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport
Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport is the primary airport serving Mumbai, India's largest city and financial capital. Located in the suburb of Santacruz in northern Mumbai, approximately 20 kilometers from the Nariman Point business district, the airport was originally built in 1942 and has been extensively modernized. BOM handles over 50 million passengers per year across two terminals. Terminal 2, which opened in 2014, is a landmark facility designed by Skidmore, Owings & Merrill, featuring a stunning interior art gallery with over 7,000 pieces celebrating Indian art and culture across the ages. The jali-patterned ceiling and expansive public art program have made Terminal 2 one of the most architecturally celebrated airport terminals in the world. Terminal 1 serves domestic traffic for select carriers and was also recently renovated. The airport is a hub for Air India, IndiGo, and other major Indian airlines, and hosts international carriers from across the globe. Mumbai's airport is constrained by its location within the dense urban fabric of the city, operating two intersecting runways with limited scope for expansion. Ground access is primarily by road via the Western Express Highway, with the Mumbai Metro planned to provide rail connections. BOM is the busiest airport in western India and a primary gateway for business travelers to India's commercial capital, with strong route networks to the Middle East, Southeast Asia, Europe, and North America.
