Contrails (condensation trails) form when hot, humid jet exhaust mixes with cold, low-pressure air at altitude. If the surrounding air is dry, the ice crystals evaporate quickly. If the air is already humid, the contrails persist and can spread into thin cirrus cloud layers. Meteorologists and experienced observers can use contrail behavior as a rough predictor of weather changes within 24-48 hours.
