Frequently Asked Questions

When should I use this tool instead of the distance calculator?
Use the Duration Comparator when you have multiple route options and want to compare them quickly. For example, if you can fly from either JFK or EWR to London, or if you are deciding between a direct flight and a connecting itinerary through a hub airport.
Can I compare more than two routes?
The tool currently supports comparing two route pairs at a time. To compare additional routes, update the origin and destination fields for either route and recalculate.
Does a shorter distance always mean a shorter flight?
Not necessarily. While distance is the primary factor, short-haul flights use a lower average cruise speed and have a higher proportion of time spent in climb and descent. A 1,000 km flight averages about 750 km/h, while a 6,000 km flight averages about 870 km/h, so the longer route may be proportionally faster.

Methodology

Each route is independently calculated using the Haversine formula for distance and the standard flight time model for duration. The comparator then displays the results side by side with the absolute and percentage time difference highlighted. This helps identify which route option is faster, even when distances are similar but cruise speeds differ due to the short-haul vs long-haul speed variation.
