-3.4

meters below sea level

Schiphol Airport in Amsterdam sits 3.4 meters below sea level, protected by an extensive system of dikes, pumps, and drainage canals.

Erläuterung

The Netherlands has a long history of reclaiming land from the sea, and Schiphol is built on a former lake bed (Haarlemmermeer) that was drained in the 1850s. The airport relies on continuous water management to stay dry. Despite this geographic challenge, Schiphol is one of Europe's busiest airports, handling over 60 million passengers annually.
