The vast majority of airports serve general aviation, military operations, or private use. Only about 10% have commercial airline service with ticketed passengers. The United States alone accounts for nearly half the total with over 19,700 airports. Many developing countries have relatively few airports despite large populations, creating significant air connectivity gaps.
