Premier Atterrissage Passager Entièrement Automatisé

1965

year

A BEA Trident performed the first automatic landing in revenue passenger service on June 10, 1965, at London Heathrow in dense fog.

Explication

British European Airways used the Hawker Siddeley Trident's autoland system to touch down in conditions that would have otherwise required diversion. The system used the ILS signal to guide the aircraft all the way to the runway surface. This Cat III autoland capability eventually became standard on most commercial aircraft, allowing operations in near-zero visibility conditions.
