Premier Service Aérien Régulier

1914

year

The St. Petersburg-Tampa Airboat Line began the world's first scheduled airline service on January 1, 1914, flying across Tampa Bay.

Explication

Pilot Tony Jannus flew a Benoist XIV flying boat carrying one passenger across Tampa Bay, reducing a half-day trip by land to just 23 minutes. The service operated for four months before ending due to the seasonal departure of tourists. The one-way fare was five dollars, and the single seat was auctioned to the highest bidder on the inaugural flight.
