Located on the Norwegian archipelago of Svalbard in the Arctic, the airport serves flights to Oslo and Tromso operated by SAS and Norwegian. During polar night from November to February, aircraft arrive and depart in complete darkness. The permafrost ground requires special runway construction techniques to prevent heaving and cracking.
