DFW's sprawling layout reflects its 1960s design philosophy of separate terminal buildings connected by an internal road and rail network. Each terminal operates semi-independently with its own access roads. The airport covers an area larger than the island of Manhattan and serves as a major hub for American Airlines. Some airports like JFK and Heathrow also have five or more terminals.
