Premier Avion de Ligne Fly-by-Wire
1988
year
The Airbus A320 entered service in 1988 as the first commercial airliner with a digital fly-by-wire flight control system.
Explication
Fly-by-wire replaces mechanical linkages between the cockpit controls and flight surfaces with electronic signals processed by computers. This allows envelope protection, preventing pilots from exceeding safe flight parameters. The A320's sidestick controller (instead of a traditional yoke) became an Airbus trademark. The technology is now standard on nearly all new commercial aircraft.
