About Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County Airport
Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County Airport, commonly known as Detroit Metro, is the primary airport serving the Detroit metropolitan area in Michigan. DTW opened in 1930 and has grown into a major two-terminal facility handling approximately 36 million passengers annually. The McNamara Terminal, which opened in 2002, is one of the largest single-building airport terminals in North America, stretching over one mile with three concourses and an automated people mover. The North Terminal serves multiple airlines with a more compact layout. DTW is a major hub for Delta Air Lines, which operates the vast majority of flights from the McNamara Terminal and offers extensive domestic and international service. Spirit Airlines also maintains a significant presence at the airport. Ground transportation to downtown Detroit is primarily by car or shuttle, as the region lacks a direct rail connection to the airport, though the SMART bus system provides regular service. The airport is located in Romulus, Michigan, approximately 20 miles southwest of downtown Detroit. DTW's three parallel runways allow for efficient simultaneous operations, contributing to the airport's reputation for on-time performance even during the challenging winter weather conditions that frequently affect the Great Lakes region.
