About Los Angeles International Airport
Los Angeles International Airport is the primary airport serving the greater Los Angeles area and the busiest airport on the West Coast of the United States. LAX opened in 1930 as Mines Field and was renamed in 1949. The airport handles approximately 88 million passengers annually, making it one of the top five busiest airports in the world. LAX features nine passenger terminals arranged in a horseshoe shape around a central area, connected by the LAX Automated People Mover, a 2.25-mile elevated train that opened in 2024. The airport serves as a major hub for Delta Air Lines, American Airlines, United Airlines, Alaska Airlines, and Southwest Airlines. LAX is the largest origin-and-destination airport in the United States, meaning most passengers begin or end their journey here rather than connecting. The iconic Theme Building, a mid-century modern structure built in 1961, remains a recognizable landmark at the center of the terminal complex. LAX offers extensive nonstop service to destinations across Asia, Oceania, Europe, and Latin America, with particularly strong connectivity to the Asia-Pacific region.
