About Newark Liberty International Airport
Newark Liberty International Airport, located in Newark and Elizabeth, New Jersey, is one of three major airports serving the New York City metropolitan area. EWR opened in 1928 as the first major airport in the New York area and was the busiest airport in the world during the 1930s. Today the airport handles over 46 million passengers annually across three terminals labeled A, B, and C. Terminal A was completely rebuilt and reopened in 2023 as a $2.7 billion state-of-the-art facility with 33 gates and modern amenities. Newark serves as a major hub for United Airlines, which operates primarily from Terminals A and C, and offers extensive domestic and international service. The airport is connected to the NJ Transit and Amtrak rail network via the Newark Airport station and the AirTrain Newark monorail, which links all terminals to the train station. From Newark Airport station, passengers can reach New York Penn Station in approximately 30 minutes by train. The airport's proximity to Manhattan and its extensive United Airlines hub operations make it a popular choice for both business and leisure travelers in the New York region. EWR also handles significant cargo operations and is a major freight gateway for the northeastern United States.
