About Hartsfield Jackson Atlanta International Airport
Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport is the busiest airport in the world by passenger traffic, handling over 93 million travelers annually. Located seven miles south of downtown Atlanta, Georgia, the airport has held the title of world's busiest since 1998. ATL traces its origins to an abandoned auto racetrack that was converted to an airfield in 1925. The current facility features a domestic terminal with four concourses and an international terminal with one concourse, all connected by an underground automated people mover called The Plane Train. The airport serves as the primary hub for Delta Air Lines, which operates the majority of flights and accounts for roughly 75 percent of all passenger traffic at the airport. ATL is connected to downtown Atlanta via the MARTA rail system, with a direct train from the airport station to the city center in about 20 minutes. The airport's central geographic position in the southeastern United States makes it an efficient connecting point for flights between the Northeast, Midwest, and destinations across the Sun Belt, Caribbean, and Latin America.
