About San Francisco International Airport
San Francisco International Airport, located 13 miles south of downtown San Francisco along the shore of San Francisco Bay, is the largest airport in Northern California and a major international gateway to the Asia-Pacific region. SFO opened in 1927 as Mills Field Municipal Airport and has grown into a facility handling over 57 million passengers annually. The airport has four terminals with seven boarding areas, including the Harvey Milk Terminal 1, which opened in 2019 as part of a $2.4 billion renovation. SFO serves as a hub for United Airlines and Alaska Airlines, and is known for its strong international route network, particularly to East Asia and Oceania. The airport is directly connected to downtown San Francisco and the broader Bay Area via Bay Area Rapid Transit, with the BART station located in the International Terminal. SFO was the first airport in the United States to ban the sale of single-use plastic water bottles and has long been recognized for its environmental sustainability initiatives. The airport also houses the SFO Museum, an accredited museum that features rotating exhibitions throughout the terminals.
